THE STRATEGY

Just like you, everyone out there is studying 10hrs a day. But what makes a difference is your strategy.

QUICK TIPS:

  1. Finish your syllabus thoroughly as soon as possible. (lays the foundation)
  2. Make sure you are strong in basics, no need to waste time in advanced topics, just adhere to the syllabus (most important)
  3. Practice previous years’ GATE questions and good online test series. (improves your understanding of concepts. I joined a couple of test series and did previous years’ papers).
  4. Sleep for 8hrs/day. (helps rejuvenate your mind)
  5. Be regular in your studies. Study for neither 15hrs nor 0hrs in a day. Don’t exhaust yourself too much in a day that you end up taking leaves for next 2 days.
  6. Do the right things and do them right; throw away the unnecessary things from your life (I left Fb, WA) and embrace the right ones (health , family, discipline).

MY STORY MY WORDS:

I came back to my native, Delhi, on September 11, 2015. I spent 4-5 days gathering the notes and formulating the strategy. I didn’t join any classroom coaching for I was too late to be admitted to any batch of any leading Gate Coaching institutes. (Though I was recently enlightened that THERE ARE some batches which accept a latecomer like me.)  I was also clear that regularity is not an issue with me. I made a long-term goal, monthly goals, and daily goals.

If you have slightest of the slightest doubt on your concepts, please join a coaching institute. Or if you believe you can perform better after joining it, please go ahead and enroll yourself in a classroom coaching program.

In the exam, your hard work and self-study will help you the most. But, never let yourself feel the guilt of not joining a coaching institute. Let me annotate it with a quote:

“Guilt is to the spirit, what pain is to the body”          – Elder David A. Bednar

LONG-TERM GOAL:

GATE RANK 1 (I had even set daily reminder for this. :D)

MONTHLY GOALS:

I slept 8hrs/day and studied neither more than 10hrs nor less than 6hrs in a day. Be regular! There isn’t a single day when I studied too much or too less. Not more than 10hrs and not less than 6hrs.

Mid-September – October 31 – Finish the GATE syllabus.

I had paid attention to my academics during B.Tech, so I was pretty confident on my concepts and fortunately, I had the lecture notes with me. I referred those notes, NPTEL lectures, and some free lectures available online. By the first week of November, I was able to finish my syllabus thoroughly.
I was able to finish the syllabus in such a short time, only because my University (Delhi Technological University (formerly DCE)) teachers taught me very well and I paid attention to what they taught that time. Moreover, I appeared for GATE in 2015 also, prepared for 1 month but was not able to secure a rank under 100. That time, I bagged 450 rank. So, I was in touch with the concepts.

MOST IMPORTANT – Revisions. Keep revising periodically whatever you have learned. E.g. if I learn something today, I’ll revisit it after a week, then after 15 days and then once in a month. In the last month of my preparation, I revised everything on a weekly basis. This is how I distributed my time:

StrategyTableGeneral Aptitude – 5 questions daily.
# – keep a margin of 2/3 days for some unwanted events.
* – It doesn’t mean simply taking the test. Instead, take the test – analyze it – identify your weaknesses and work on them.

Nov 3 – Nov 30 – Practice previous year questions, topic-wise (twice if possible) and take tests.

On the first day of this period, I took a “FULL” test to check my understanding. Obviously, I didn’t perform exceptionally well, I was able to score 57 marks. From there, I started improving. Daily, I took 1 online test [subject-wise] , followed by its analysis and then a WRITTEN correction of my mistakes and rectification of approach. I also practiced previous year GATE questions topic-wise daily.
This period helped me identify areas of improvement and involuntarily skipped topics.

Dec 1 – Dec 31 – Practice + Revision

  • 1st week : Revision + 1 Full test*
  • 2nd week: 2 online subject tests* (daily) + 1 FULL test*
  • 3rd & 4th weeks: Online tests* [subject-wise] + 2 FULL test* + Previous year GATE papers ( with corrections)

During this phase, I tried to improve my speed. I tried to solve the ‘full syllabus’ test in 2 and a half hours so that in the remaining half an hour I can go through it again.
This literally helped me during my GATE exam. I finished the exam in 2 hours and 40 minutes and identified my silly mistakes in remaining 20 minutes which saved me 3.33 MARKS (IMAGINE!).

Jan 1 – Feb 5 – REVISIONS + MOCK TESTS.

I ate healthy to make sure I don’t fall ill in the peak period. NO JUNK! NO PIZZA! NO CHEESE!
Revisions also included revisiting my mistakes again and again so that I don’t repeat them in FINAL EXAM.

  • 1st week – Revision + I solved GATE Previous year papers again and did written corrections for my mistakes + 1 MOCK test*.
  • 2nd week – 3 online subject tests daily with corrections + 1 MOCK TEST*
  • 3rd week – Revision + 2 MOCK TEST*
  • 4th week – Previous year GATE papers once again (with corrections): 3 papers daily + 2 mock tests.
  • Remaining days – Revision!
  • Feb 5 – RELAX!!

I practiced GATE previous year papers more than 4 times each. This practice and the Online test series made me feel at home during the examination. I took more than 100 tests during my preparation. I found explanations provided for GATE questions on GATEoverflow & GeeksForGeeks very useful. Moreover, I used “handbook of CS” published by MADE EASY for quick revision in final days of my preparation. I found it good and precise.

ONLINE TEST SERIES:

Practice played a vital role in my success. I had joined online test series of MADE EASY and ACE. I suggest gate aspirants enroll in multiple test series so that you can encounter a lot of questions without over-fitting the data. For more information on these test series, read this.

STUDY-MATERIAL/BOOKS/NOTES

I referred my class notes which were prepared from standard books. As I had a little time, I skipped going through the books all over again. Instead, I used my notes, NPTEL lectures, and some random free online lectures.

You can refer the books suggested here.

A final note to the readers:
If I have helped you in any way, and you wish to say thanks, then please feed a stray animal at least once in your lifetime.

Thanks for your patience!

  1. Hello Ankita! I have four questions…1.Is it necessary to be a very good programmer (c,ds,algo) to solve those questions in gate. 2. There are three test series in made easy forum..which one you took? 3. I always start the preparation but in the middle I lost my energy to continue..how did you continue the whole preparation regularly with same enthusiasm? 4. I have a little concept of some subjects of gate..If I start to study from middle of July with everyday 5 hours from standard books,is it possible to complete them by November?

    1. 1. No. Though it helps.
      2. Online GATE test series for CS 2016. For you it should be 2017.
      3. Look at the syllabus and your goals. It’s very important to define goals first.
      4. Yes it is possible. Totally depends on you.

  3. Hello… It’ll be very helpful if you can share the scan copies of your notes which you referred during your preparation + the soft copies that you found helpful on internet. It’ll help us a lot.

    1. Hi Vandan,
my notes are not structured but scattered as I didn’t prepare notes during prep. I prepared notes only for difficult topics. I have notes of some topics but they are handwritten and I don’t have a scanner. Moreover, to share my algo and CN notes I need permission from my Profs as they were prepared by them. You may not be able to build concepts even if I share them + soon people will start selling them. So my suggestion would be to follow notes provided by IITs. I have also followed some of them.

Having said that, you should refer what you can understand. Google handouts(pdfs)/ppts, there is a lot of info available on Internet. Rank 1 doesn’t mean my notes are superior or recommended.

You may buy MadeEasy’s handbook. It is good for revision but don’t rely on it completely. Always cross-check with the syllabus.

      All the best.

  4. Hello Ankita! First of all congratulations for your achievement 🙂

I have started my classroom program of made easy from this month. Preparation has started from Algorithm design and i am not very confident with everything i am learning each day. Precisely, time complexity and its use in every next topic which comes. Can you please provide me a source which i can consult or go through to have a better understanding of this topic? Any lecture, weblink anything.

Thanks in advance and regards 🙂

    3. Is there any interview or something ..or just gate score is sufficient to get into iisc, iits.

      Thanks!
      1. Actual-88.67. Normalized – 85.95
      2. TIFR & One for ISI (don’t know the name). I had taken only GATE so don’t know much. You may check GATECSE
      3. Depends on the University and it’s departments. A Good rank(below 40-50 I suppose) ensures direct admission in most of them.
IISc relied completely on GATE score for M.tech this year. IITD has interviewed most of its CS PG intakes while Mechanical dept in IITD has considered only GATE score for mtech (i.e. No interview).

      All the best 🙂

Are these Online Tests for which you enrolled ??
And did you try to appear for the test after studying the topic scheduled on the day ??

    1. Yeah these are OTS( online test series) tests. I joined MadeEasy OTS in late October or early November (I don’t remember). So most of the tests I appeared for during Sep-oct are from Ace’s OTS. Yeah after completing the goals I had set for a subject I took its OTS tests.

  8. General Personal Issue :

I (GATE Aspirant 2017) Want to ask you about on how to add more hours and efforts to GATE Preparation smartly?
Because as I have to maintain minimum college attendance & simultaneously I and my college friends together working on final year project from now on(3 days per week). SO I am unable to find more time for GATE Preparation. and it seems really demotivating for GATE Preparation.

So along with 1. College(Sem 7) 2. Final Year Project(UDP) , How do i devote more time for GATE Preparation.?
Is there any way/solution available? How do i approach this problem?
[ How do you manage in this kind of problem?]
[because practically it becomes really hectic situation…]
[NOTE : Project Friends are not preparing for GATE.]
[Facing this issue since 1 month.]

can you tell me how to overcome this weak area ? i mean how to regularly increase concept i mean no matter how much i studied last time i could not cross a particular threshold…how to improvise?

    1. I believe Regularity is the key. I also have a habit of fighting with the ques unless I get a convincing solution. I don’t accept solutions very easily + I try to figure out the fault in MY approach whenever I read solution of a problem. There could be several ways of solving a problem. I try to figure out why my approach didn’t work instead of accepting someone else’s approach. I think this helped me enormously.

My question for you is ” You will be weak is some subjects right? so when writing the mocks if you come in a rank which is say 200 or 300 out of 1000, how will you take it? or you were not affected by your mock ranks?” . The thing is that when I write the made easy and ace mocks I am very concerned about my ranks and get affected even if it is a short test. Any suggestions on dealing with it? Hope you will reply.

    Solve 1 mark ques

    Section GA:
    Solve 2 mark ques
    Solve 1 mark ques

I know it depends on me, that what sequence should I follow, but what I want to ask you is,

DO YOU THINK THERE IS ANY PROBLEM IN SOLVING 2 MARK QUESTIONS FIRST? WILL IT BE HELPFULL TO SOLVE IN THAT WAY?

    1. It should be ok. However, it depends on you. I don’t think there is any problem solving 2marks ques first. Solve the easy questions first. An easy 2 mark ques is icing on cake. So don’t get stuck in 2 mark ques too. If a question takes more than 2-3mins, its better to leave it and solve others. All the best 🙂

  36. Mam.. How did you correct the mistakes?? I mean I have given nearly 30 subjecwise test.. And my score mostly ranges from 70-80% (35-40 marks) .. I am unable to improve.. The mistakes are very silly like calculations, assuming question without actually reading it fully(comparing with older question).. What should I do to correct it??

Happy to help, but it is you who worked hard, who made choices and thus the victory belongs to you.

  38. Hello Ankita ma’am

I am Rishi, preparing for GATE 2017. I have completed full syllabus and now practicing subject wise test from Ravindrababu Ravula’s test series. Can you please how can I improve my score at this point of time and suggest some points how I should prepare in the last month of GATE

    1. Analyze your mistakes and don’t repeat them. This is the only way I know to improve scores. In the last month, revise as much as possible and practice previous year papers once again at least.
